Almost no one realizes that these seemingly insignificant small plants are working nonstop 24 hours a day to clear hidden pollution that no one pays attention to for the entire neighborhood. Over the past three years, independent urban ecology teams across 17 mid-sized North American cities collected more than 1200 soil and plant samples from residential areas built on former small industrial sites, old gas station lots and blocks that once hosted small paint workshops, and the final collected data completely overturned most people’s existing common sense about weeds.

Many parents in older residential communities often worry about invisible lead residues left in the soil, which mostly come from weathered leaded paint used decades ago and the long-term settlement of exhaust from old vehicles. The treatment method most municipal departments chose in the past was to dig away all the surface contaminated soil, transport it to special landfills dozens of kilometers away, and lay new clean topsoil, which costs more than 120 US dollars per square meter and generates a large amount of carbon emissions during long-distance transportation. Monitoring data shows that an idle corner plot naturally grown with native plantain, white clover and ordinary dandelions can reduce the lead content in the top 15 centimeters of soil by 41% to 53% over seven years, fully meeting the safety soil standards for areas where children play, without any manual energy input. The roots of these weeds will fix heavy metal elements in their stems and leaves, and community workers only need to collect these withered plants in autumn and send them to special harmless treatment stations for incineration, so heavy metals will be locked in the incineration ash instead of leaking back into the surrounding environment.

Many urban landscape management teams have stuck to the goal of a fully neat city landscape for decades, implementing comprehensive weed removal programs that use broad-spectrum herbicides to eliminate all wild plants not on the pre-set landscape list on a regular schedule, and many communities even cleared all weeds in green areas and paved decorative plastic mats to avoid exposing bare soil. But long-term follow-up data shows that without the adsorption effect of these wild herbs, heavy metal particles in surface soil are more easily blown into the air by daily wind, or seep into deeper soil layers with rainfall, and even enter shallow groundwater. A residential community in Ohio spent nearly 120,000 US dollars in 2018 to remove all 200 square meters of weeds around the parking lot and paved a leak-proof plastic mat, but three years later, groundwater sampling data showed that the content of petroleum hydrocarbons in shallow groundwater in this area was 217% higher than before the clearing, because there was no plant root system to block the pollutants under the plastic mat, and rainwater carrying pollutants seeped down directly along the gaps.

More and more urban communities are calling off this maintenance mode that blindly pursues a completely weed-free landscape, and many residential areas have specially reserved 1 to 2 meters wide natural grass belts at the edges of parking lots and on both sides of walking paths, where herbicides are never sprayed and native wild herbs are not deliberately removed. Simple signage tells residents these small grasses are the community’s exclusive natural cleaners that should not be trampled or pulled out at will. These grass belts can not only absorb pollutants in the soil, but also provide food and shelter for local solitary bees and butterfly larvae. Community monitoring data over the past two years shows that residential areas with reserved natural grass belts have 270% more local pollinating insects than communities covered with single-type lawns, and residents’ average walking stay time has increased by 18 minutes. Many parents take their children to squat beside the grass belts to observe different small insects, so they do not need to drive for hours to suburban nature reserves to access rich small urban ecosystems.

Ordinary people do not need to be environmental professionals to participate in this natural remediation action. The next time you spot small weeds under your community building, you do not need to bend down to pull them up in a hurry, unless they are growing in the vegetable growing box you carefully tended to steal nutrients from your crops.
